Walleye
Walleye fingerlings and fry are stocked by the PFBC. Work points, drop-offs, and low-light windows. Great table fare when legal to keep.
Muskellunge & Northern Pike
Muskie fingerlings are stocked here — the “fish of 10,000 casts” that makes a Shenango trip legendary. Heavy tackle, big baits, and patience.
Hybrid Striped Bass
Hybrids add open-water excitement. Watch for baitfish schools and summer surface action. A favorite of boat anglers who love a hard pull.
Crappie & Panfish
Black crappie, bluegill, and friends keep kids busy and skillets full. Brush piles, docks, and shallow cover in spring and fall are classic.
Channel & Flathead Catfish
Strong populations of channel cats — and flatheads for the patient. Evening bank fishing with cut bait or live bait is pure summer nostalgia.
Boat Fishing
Launch at marina and Corps ramps. Unlimited horsepower zones mix with no-wake areas near shore — give paddlers and docks a wide berth. North Star Marina offers fuel, rentals, and a private ramp for guests.
Bank & Pier Fishing
Shoreline access and public recreation areas make Shenango friendly without a boat. Foggy mornings with a bucket of minnows are a local tradition. Always respect private property and posted Corps rules.
Licenses & Rules
A valid Pennsylvania fishing license is required. Bass anglers should review Big Bass regulations; other species follow inland statewide rules unless posted. Confirm seasons and limits at the PFBC before your trip.
When to Come
Spring and fall for bass and crappie; summer evenings for cats and hybrids; cool seasons for walleye. Water levels can drop later in summer depending on rainfall — check conditions and launch depths if trailer size matters.
